How to Keep Organized for Back to School

Back to School can be exciting and daunting at the same time. Getting all of the supplies, and getting into a new schedule. Today we are going to talk about how to keep organized for back to school!

Thanks for stopping This Nest Living! Back to school is in full swing and today we are going to be talking about how to keep organized!

Keeping organized is tough. Especially if the organization isn’t easy or user friendly. So today I am going to share a few ideas that we use to keep organized, ESPECIALLY as the kids start their new year!

Ideas for Keeping Organized

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission at no cost to you. You can see my full disclosure HERE. However, I have purchased ALL of these products and the opinions are my own!

The first thing is for mom (or dad, whoever fixes the meals). And if you have been around for a while, you know I like lists. And this suggestion is to make a grocery list AND meal plan for the week. I shop every 2 weeks so I will make a meal plan for those two weeks. And if I don’t, I find that I never buy enough to last those 2 weeks. AND THAT IS A PROBLEM. This also helps to keep from the last minute “what are we going to have for supper?”. And there is nothing worse, especially if you work at all during the day. So plan ahead. This will be a BIG headache saver.

Second thing is if your children pack lunches (or you pack for them), make sure you keep all supplies organized and together. I stock up at Aldi, and I have several baskets and bins that I keep stocked at all times for them to pick food from. This goes for the pantry AND the refrigerator. This helps in MY house especially because my children pack their own lunches. And I can keep track of what we have available to them.

Third, make sure their closets/drawers are decluttered. If they have a bunch of clothes that do not fit them mixed in with all of their other clothes, they will tend to just wear the things on top and “run out” of clean clothes. If they just have what they will wear and what fits them, then they seem to have a BUNCH more clothing options. Another suggestion to go with this is to make sure they have a basket for their dirty clothes. MAKE THEM USE IT. My boys have had clothes baskets for year. In recent years, my older boys share one in their bathroom because that is what works best for them. And my younger boys keep their in their rooms. This makes it easy on laundry days when you say “bring my your laundry!”.

Forth, give them an easy place to put their backpacks, shoes and eventually coats. We all know kids. They drop their stuff almost as soon as they come through the door. So what can you do to make sure it doesn’t look a total mess at your door every day? There’s not one solution that will work for every family. So you have to look at the space you have… is there a closet? is there an empty corner or a corner that COULD be used to store school things? is there some sort or organizational system you could add to an space close to the door?

This was our front door. It’s actually surprisingly clean. Probably because the boys were all gone at the time… but TYPICALLY there are at least 10-12 pairs of shoes. During the school year, add backpacks and jackets, and you have quite a mess! So this year, I had an idea of how to reuse an old shelf we had got about 8-10 years ago. I brought it up from the basement and saw we used it a little TOO much and the faux wood had bee worn off on the shelf fronts. So I decide to order self adhesive shelf liner. I got THIS ONE from Amazon. It came in literally a day. And it worked perfectly. Check this out…

Here is what this area looks like today:

Whatever you add, make sure the kids use it! It may take practice and LOTS of reminding. But it can work!

In Closing

I hope this helped give you some ideas on how you can keep organized for back to school. If you have any you’d like to share, please put hose in the comments! I always love getting new ideas.
